JANIE, TURN IT OVER EP
June 16, Shout! / Cherry Red Records
“Willie Jones is the secret heart of Detroit Soul, and now that secret is out.” – Cheetah Chrome (The Dead Boys)
Check this out for an extraordinary artist Mash-Up – a vintage R&B singer, performing since the 1950’s hits back with a debut Uk EP featuring none other than The Pixies Black Francis.
Brought together hit songwriter, musician, producer Jon Tiven (Robert Cray, Jeff Healey, Huey Lewis, Koko Taylor, Shemekia Copeland, Buddy Guy, Barrence Whitfield, Frank Black), the duo combine on this song of someone down on their luck but being exalted to pick themselves up.
Co-written by Jones, many of his songs have been constructed from experiences in life, which began in 1936, so there have a been a few. A lead vocalist with Detroit R&B band The Royal Jokers in the 1950’s on Atlantic, solo in the early 1960’s , Jones was rediscovered in the 1990’s by award winning soul singer Betty Lavette. As Jones continued to tour with a reformed Royal Jokers from 1995 onwards, so Lavette coaxed Jones back in to the studio. Jones had written a song as the b-side to Lavette’s first ever single.
Jon Tiven said this about the new recordings , and with Black Francis :
“This is a great thing, really wonderful, and even a guy like Black Francis was so happy to be involved, he had such a blast doing it – he got together with Willie a week after we did the session and he just loved the guy to death, that was great to get that affirmation from him”.
Second track on the EP is a new song written by Keith Reid, the Procul Harum lyricist, who more recently has resided in New York and collaborated with Jon and Sally Tiven on many songs. Both tracks are from the debut album by Jones ‘Fire In My Soul’ due for release in July.
Exclusive to the EP are the songs Half Price and The Best Revenge, again Jones co-writes from experience and his knowing sense of humour.
